Working With Hazardous Materials
We are surrounded by hazardous materials both at school and at home. Cleaning materials, art and science supplies, gasoline and medicines are only a few of the substances that we encounter. Follow these guidelines to prevent accidents:
- Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using a chemical for the first time.
- Follow the instructions in the MSDS on how to use, store and dispose of the chemical.
- Store flammables in an approved container or in an approved flammables cabinet.
- Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (i.e., gloves, goggles, respiratory equipment, etc.) when using a hazardous substance.
- Keep all hazardous substances locked up and out of children's reach.
- Don't transfer cleaning materials or other substances into food, beverage or unlabelled containers.
- Keep the Poison Control Center and other emergency phone numbers posted by your telephone.
- In an emergency, call the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Control Center at (800) 222-1222, a doctor or 911, as necessary, for instructions.
- If you are instructed to go to an emergency room, take the poisonous substance or container with you.
Refer to Board Policy EBAB-Hazardous Materials.
